N’karthis staggered into the cave and slumped against its wall. He had narrowly escaped the fate of his brethren by using a dimension door to flee. He lived, but in many ways he envied his dead comrades. He would have to report his failure to his Queen, and failure promised worse things than death.
N’karthis reached his bloodied hand into his satchel and pulled forth a crystal. He closed his eyes and held the crystal for a moment and concentrated deeply. Soon he felt the presence of his Queen in his mind.
“Have you retrieved the sword?” asked Queen Vlaakith in his mind.
“No my queen I have failed you. Our enemies are more powerful than expected. I am the sole survivor of our expedition.” Replied N’karthis.
N’karthis could feel the disappointment and rage transmitted through the crystal and into his mind by his Queen and steeled himself for what was to come. Suddenly pain erupted in his head as his mind was torn. Blood began to stream from his nose and ears. He grasped his head in hope of preventing his skull from flying apart. Then as suddenly as it had happened the pain was gone.
“You will recover the sword of my former consort and return it to me or you will suffer.” Stated Vlaakith flatly. “They wish to use the sword to sever bonds which would bring my palace crumbling around me; I will not tolerate such effrontery.”
“Yes my Queen.” Gasped N’Karthis through clenched teeth. “I will not fail you again, but I humbly request the aid in the form of a new mount, one more suited for the task.”
“Very well, I will send word to Vulcanus the Hellbrand. He will set the whole of the Galenas ablaze, and you will return Shatterthought to me. The blade must be returned before it can be used to tear my palace asunder.” Replied Vlaakith before she abruptly cut the psionic communication.
Vulcanus, thought N’karthis. Would the great wyrm even allow him to climb on his back? The beast was ancient and calamity personified. The mere thought of the great beast send shivers of terror down his spine. Queen Vlaakith was sparing no expense to retrieve the sword known as Shatterthought. Vulcanus would demand recompense and N’karthis dare not think of what such a beast would require as payment.
